While Destin is known for its stunning beaches, world-class fishing and challenging golf, the area also has a variety of historic attractions. These three destinations all offer a glimpse into its notable past.

Fort Pickens26

Fort Pickens was built between 1829 and 1834. It’s one of only four southern forts that remained unoccupied by Confederate forces. Today, visitors come here to enjoy the white beach and warm ocean waters. Just a mile away, you’ll find the Fort Pickens campground and RV site where you can camp comfortably.

Fort Walton Temple Mound

Fort Walton Temple Mound once functioned as a ceremonial center for the Mississippian culture. The mound dates back over a thousand years, reaches 17 feet in height and spans 223 feet. Confederate soldiers rediscovered the long-abandoned site and used it for defensive purposes. In 1964, the mound was declared a national historic landmark.

Camp Walton

Camp Walton was established in 1861 and eventually grew into Fort Walton Beach. You can view remnants of this Civil War encampment near the Temple Mound at Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park. For a glimpse into the early history of the site, visit the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum where you can find assorted period artifacts.
