Eventually every house presents challenges—some may happen naturally with the passage of time, others you may cause yourself. Some issues may require the attention of a pro, others you may be able to handle on your own—just as long as you’re equipped with the right info. Check out these two home how-tos so you can handle things around the house.
How to Re-Caulk Sinks and Showers
Over time the caulk around bathroom sinks and between the walls inside showers can loosen and chip away, but it can be fixed relatively easily to prevent water damage. You’ll need a tube of caulk and a caulk gun from the hardware store. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45 degree angle using a utility knife. The closer you cut toward the very tip of the tube the narrower the line of caulk you will produce. Insert the tube into the caulk gun and carefully squeeze lines of caulk into the joints around your sink or shower where there is caulk missing. To ensure a tight application press the caulk into the length of the joint using your finger. Clean away any excess, and allow it to dry.
How to Patch Small Holes in Drywall
Who hasn’t created excess holes in the wall while trying to hang a painting or a picture? You move the frame a little higher, or a little lower. A little to the left, a little to the right. You finally get the perfect placement, but you’ve left lots of nail or screw holes in the process. Don’t worry. Patching-up these minor mistakes can be pretty simple.
First, clean away any loose debris from the holes. Fill the holes with a premixed spackle compound using a putty knife—both of which you’ll find at your local hardware store. Apply the compound to the holes using slightly angled downward motions, and scrape away any excess product so that the compound is level with the wall. Allow the compound to dry according to the product instructions, then sand it until it’s smooth using fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe away dust using a cloth or sponge. Finally, touch-up the repaired areas with matching paint.
