You don’t have to spend weekends hand-plucking the prickly, fuzzy, stubborn weeds that pop up in your yard. And you don’t have to resort to treating them with harsh chemicals that could endanger your children and pets. Try these natural, homemade weed killers and save yourself some effort and expense.
A Vinegar Concoction
Mix one gallon of white vinegar with one cup of salt, and one tablespoon of dish soap. Pour the solution into a spray bottle with a nozzle that can be toggled between spray and stream. If you’re treating a cluster of weeds use the spray nozzle to apply the weed-killing solution. If you need to be more targeted, toggle the nozzle to stream. Apply the solution on a sunny day, since acid from the vinegar will burn the weeds and the salt will cause them to shrivel in the sun. The dish soap is a clever addition because it makes the solution stick to the weeds.
Start Spreading the News…Paper
Yup. Newspaper.
First, level your weeds with a weed eater and then spread sheets of newspaper over the area you just cleared. Cover the newspaper with mulch, and that’s it. The newspaper blocks sun and air, which helps prevent beginning weeds from continuing to grow and new weed seeds from forming. Since newspaper is biodegradable it’ll break down with no work on your part.
Boiling Water
Instead of boiling with anger about the stubborn weeds that creep up between the cracks in your sidewalk and driveway just boil water and you can be halfway toward a solution. Pour boiling-hot water on your weeds—it’s effective at killing them pretty quickly. This method isn’t permanent, though, since it doesn’t kill weeds at the root. So if they return, just repeat the process.
