You clean your floors to a mirror shine, but what about your baseboards? Don’t forget to show them some love, too. A thorough cleaning just a couple of times a year can keep them in tip-top shape. Here’s how to clean and protect your baseboards with relative ease.
Before we get started make sure you clean your baseboards after your floors, since cleaning floors—and dusting furniture—kicks up dust and can coat your baseboards.
Vacuum Away Dust
Use your vacuum’s brush attachment to clear away dust and dirt from your baseboards. Take some time to capture the dust that collects in the tight space between the baseboards and the floor. If you don’t have a vacuum, don’t worry. A small whisk broom can still get the job done.
Scrub Clean
Washing your baseboards is pretty straightforward. All it takes is a mix of warm water, liquid dish soap, and vinegar. Use a sponge or a soft cloth to scrub away stains and scuffs—make sure you don’t put too much water on your baseboards, so consistently wring out your sponge. A toothbrush is perfect for reaching grooves. You can use a cotton swab dipped in the cleaning solution to clean the space between the baseboards and floor. Dry your baseboards using a clean towel.
If you’ve got stubborn stains and marks that simply won’t come out the solution may be to take a little paint and touch-up the blemishes.
If your baseboards are finished with a wood stain you should use a wood cleaner and mix it according to the directions of the manufacturer.
Protect From Dust
Here’s a cool trick to keep your baseboards clean. Rub them with a laundry dryer sheet. Doing so will help prevent dust-attracting static.
