“I love doing laundry,” said no one—ever. Seriously, there may be some folks out there who cherish laundry day, but it’s doubtful that even they want to spend unnecessary time sorting, soaking and spinning. So here are a few tips on how to get the job done just a little more efficiently.
Go High to Dry
Most laundry rooms have small layouts that don’t offer much in the way of space. This means you don’t have much room to hang wet clothes, which often forces you to find creative ways to compensate—like spreading your items over your washer and dryer, or over the laundry room door. So think out-of-the-basket by using the room’s available vertical space. Consider investing in a freestanding drying rack, or a retractable clothesline, to max-out the use of your laundry room.
Sorting Made Simple
Set aside three hampers in your laundry room: one for whites, lights and darks. When clothes are brought to the laundry they can immediately be tossed into the appropriate bins without having to be sorted at a later date, after a mountain of items has amassed. When any of the hampers become full it’s time to run a load. Taking a few extra minutes upfront will save you time down the line.
Corral Your Laundry and Cleaning Supplies
If your laundry room has wire shelves you know how often shelved bottles can tip and fall, and how troublesome it is to store small, thin items—and anything that doesn’t have a wide base—because of the gaps and spaces that are characteristic of wire shelving. For laundry and cleaning supplies that easily tip over or fall through the cracks, place them in a storage container with an open top before shelving them. And instead of having your laundry supplies jumbled together with household cleaners make your life a little easier by separating the two into their own bins.
