You may be rethinking how you currently use the backyard of your home. Take a critical look at your yard. Are you making the best use of space? Do you have the features you want? Which aspects of your property can you play up, and which less desirable ones can you play down? As you map out a new design give the following questions some thought.
What Are the Plusses and Minuses of Your Backyard?
Every yard has its strengths and weaknesses. Does your backyard offer little privacy between you and the neighbors? Perhaps a privacy fence, or privacy trees are in order. Does your property back up to a busy street, and you have to tolerate noise from car horns, revving engines, and screeching tires? Maybe an aesthetically-pleasing concrete wall—or wall made of some other dense, sound-deflecting material—can act as a buffer.
What Surfaces or Flooring Will Cover Your Activity Areas?
Will the activity areas of your backyard require more than one or two surfaces? If so, which will you need? Do you plan to have a grassy area for the kids to set up waterslides and play Frisbee with the dog? Perhaps paving stones will anchor a patio just outside of the sunroom. Maybe decking will cover a cozy seating area for a seamless transition between indoors and out.
What Are Your Design Inspirations?
Be on the lookout for great design ideas to incorporate into your backyard. Browse magazines, make mental notes during your favorite home design shows, search online and read blogs. If you want, take cues from your interior décor and carry the color scheme or theme outdoors. Or, not. You don’t have to tie yourself to what you’ve got going on indoors—you can introduce something new. Throughout the process just remember to have fun.
