If you’re buying a home for sale along 30A, you know you’ll need home insurance – but do you really know why?
Here’s the scoop on home insurance policies.
3 Things You Need to Know About Home Insurance
Home insurance is there to protect you in the event of a loss – say, from a natural disaster or theft. However, here’s what most people don’t know:
- Some of your belongings might not be covered under your policy, so you may need to invest in extra coverage
- Homeowners insurance usually pays for injuries that happen on your property (except yours or your family’s)
- Flood coverage doesn’t come with standard policies
Do You Need Extra Coverage?
Home insurance has limits, and it doesn’t always cover everything. Read the fine print in your policy – it may not reimburse you for things like expensive jewelry, art or antique family heirlooms. You might need personal property insurance to cover those things.
What’s That About Injuries?
If someone gets hurt on your property, your home insurance policy may kick in to cover the claim. However, that’s not always the case – and if it’s you or one of your family members who gets hurt, you’ll have to rely on your health insurance for coverage.
Flood Insurance is Separate
Most standard insurance policies don’t cover flood damage. That’s a totally separate type of insurance with its own premiums and requirements. Floods can happen anywhere, any time – so if your policy doesn’t have flood insurance built in (and again, most don’t), it’s time to look into separate coverage.
