If you’re like many people, spring cleaning led to a lot of boxed-up items that you can do without – especially if you’re selling your home and looking for a new one.
And that means you’re having a yard sale or putting items online to sell.
Here’s how you can make the most when you’re getting rid of items you don’t need.

3 Tips to Make the Most Money When You Sell Your Stuff at a Yard Sale This Summer
Use these three tips to make the most cash when you sell your belongings at a yard sale:
- Use apps to supplement your yard sale
- Bundle items together
- Choose the right time
Let’s take a closer look at each of these tips so you can maximize your “take.”
Use Apps to Supplement Your Yard Sale
Using apps to advertise the items you’re going to sell at the yard sale can drastically cut down the number of items you have to price and put out on yard sale day. In fact, using things like Letgo and the Facebook Marketplace can almost make it so that you don’t need to hold a physical yard sale at all.
When you use apps to sell your stuff, you simply take photos of each item, put up a listing description and set a price. People can contact you directly through the app to ask questions or let you know if they’re interested – and you simply meet them in a safe place and exchange the goods for the cash.

Bundle Items Together
Don’t waste a lot of time listing individual items if you can bundle them together. Things like books, kids’ toys, games and Christmas decorations can go together – and even if the people who are offering to buy your stuff don’t want a particular item, they’ll often take it because it’s part of a package. When you do that, you can also ask for a higher price than you could if you were selling items individually. Five boxes of Christmas lights, for example, can pair up with a box of vintage ornaments you no longer use – and then you can combine the price and get one person to take the whole lot. A series of kids’ toys from the same line – like dolls or action figures, for example, can also go together.
Choose the Right Time
List your items and hold your yard sale when it makes the most sense – like right after payday. Some people swear by the 1st and 15th of each month, because that’s when biweekly pay goes out, but if you have the inside scoop on when a large company in the area cuts its checks, you can plan around it.
People are in a shopping mood right after payday, but if you’re in a pinch, don’t worry too much about timing. Just make sure to get the word out using sites like Craigslist, the NextDoor app, and Facebook yard sale groups so you can notify as many people as possible that you’re having a sale.
