This Independence Day you’re probably eager to fire-up the grill and cook all of your family’s favorites. On the menu: burgers, hotdogs, barbecue chicken—drenched in your special homemade secret sauce, grilled steak, shrimp, and corn-on-the-cob. You’ve remembered everything for the big day, but before you get the party started remember these grilling safety tips—not just for the Fourth of July, but for every use of your grill.
Distance the Grill
According to the National Fire Protection Association, grills are the source of over 10,000 home fires each year. When in use keep your free-standing grill at least 10 feet away from your home and any other structures. Also, be sure that it isn’t near trees or branches that could catch fire.
Supervise the Grill
Although you won’t be constantly standing over the grill, don’t leave it unattended. Always supervise it when it’s in use, and if you step away have another adult keep a watchful eye. Never allow children to operate the grill and maintain a 3-foot safety zone around it to help keep them, as well as your pets, at a safe distance. Remember to clean the grill after each use. Doing so will remove grease, which could start a fire.
Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby
Keep a fire extinguisher handy in case a grilling accident occurs. Your extinguisher should be a dry-chemical extinguisher with a Class B and C or multi-purpose rating. When using it follow the PASS procedure, which is: Pull the pin; Aim at the base of the fire; Squeeze the trigger (slowly); Sweep the nozzle from side to side. The majority of portable extinguishers can reach from 6 to 10 feet for a duration of 8 to 10 seconds.
Store Used Coals
After you’ve finished grilling allow your coals to cool, then place them into a metal can with a lid.
