Some of the least obvious pieces of furniture in your home could present hazards to your toddlers. Help safeguard your children against the potential dangers of these household items.
Dresser Drawers
Your dresser drawers can easily become a hazard to your kids if they pull them open and use them to climb. To prevent this, install stops or locks so that your children can’t open the drawers. Also, be mindful to place heavier items in the lower portions of your dresser so that it won’t be top-heavy.
Free-Standing TVs
TVs that sit on top of stands can tip over and fall on young children. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, from 2000 to 2011, TVs that tipped over accounted for 62 percent of fatalities among young children. Although newer, lightweight flatscreen TVs may appear to be steady on a low stand, children can pull them over. Experts say it’s best to mount your TV on a wall, placing it out of the reach of small children. If you choose to place your TV on a stand, be sure to keep toys and remotes away so your children won’t attempt to grab for them.
Steamer Trunks and Storage Ottomans
Curious kids can lift the lids of these items, only to have them slam shut on their fingers. Soft-close lids can help alleviate this problem. Keep in mind, too, that children who might play games such as hide-and-seek could become trapped inside. So try to keep these storage items full to help prevent kids from crawling inside.
