If your air conditioner is on the blink, sometimes all it takes is the replacement of a bad capacitor, a faulty condenser pump, or the fix of a leak to get it back on track. Sometimes, though, the fix isn’t so straightforward and your unit needs to be replaced. Consider these warning signs that you may need a new AC.
Your Unit Is Older Than Your Teenager
Most conventional air conditioners last between 12 to 15 years. If your AC unit is more than 15 years old be mindful that if it begins to consistently fail it may be near the end of its useful life.
Your System Becomes Noisy
As your cooling equipment starts up and shuts down it’s normal for it to make a low-level noise. But if your unit makes loud, sudden, or unusual noises, it may mean trouble lies ahead.
Your Energy Bill Increases
If your air conditioning unit is failing it may become less efficient and have to work harder to maintain the temperature you set in your home. This consumes more energy and causes your monthly energy bill to rise. Because heating and cooling your home accounts for half of your energy bill, if your bill spikes a faulty air conditioning system may be to blame.
Your Repair Costs Start Adding Up
The infrequent replacement of a faulty part here or there is one thing, but the constant need for repairs to your unit mean it’s going downhill. If the accumulated costs to fix your AC are more than 50 percent of the cost of a new unit, you should replace your existing one.
When Considering a Replacement Unit
If you decide to replace your unit be sure to choose one that has an Energy Star rating. These systems are highly efficient and can save you up to 20 percent in costs for heating and cooling.
