“I want shorter-looking ceilings,” said no one. Ever. When it comes to ceiling height taller is almost always better, especially in small spaces. We’re not simply going to tell you to hang your curtains just below the ceiling, or to use lots of mirrors to reflect natural light—those techniques are awesome, but you’ve probably heard them before. Small space or not, consider these ways to make the ceilings in your home appear taller.
Make Framed Art Touch the Ceiling
Place your framed art and photos vertically in spaced columns. The vertical lines created by the frames will stretch the eye upward. But here’s the trick: run the columns all the way to the ceiling. The frames closest to the ceiling should actually touch the ceiling. This unusual technique uses every possible inch of the wall to visually push the ceiling higher.
Paint the Ceiling with a High-Gloss, Mirror-Like Finish
A matte finish helps to detract from the ceiling and make it fade away, but by painting the ceiling with a high-gloss mirror finish—instead of deemphasizing it you’ll be using it to your advantage. The trick of this technique is that the mirror finish will project the entire room back to itself and give it the illusion of endlessness. The high-gloss will also reflect light and brighten and heighten the look of the ceilings.
Lower the Ceiling Color
The ceiling doesn’t have to end where the walls begin. At least, it doesn’t have to look that way. If your wall color is darker than the color of your ceiling, try painting the ceiling color down about four inches onto the wall. This will change the perception of the boundaries of the ceiling and trick the mind into thinking it’s taller than it really is.
Use Furniture with Low-Profile Horizontal Lines
Furnishing your space with seating in which the horizontal lines are lower than average can help maximize the perceived height of the ceiling and make it seem like the room is taller than it really is. An added benefit is that low-profile furniture positioned in front of windows won’t block views or incoming light.
