Who doesn’t want a green lawn with lush, carpet-like grass to enhance their landscape and home? Follow these lawn care tips and you can be well on your way.
Maintain a Sharp Mower Blade
It’s important to keep the blade of your lawnmower sharp. This will ensure that you cut the blades of your grass cleanly and not tear them, which can create openings for diseases and pests.
Cut Your Grass to the Ideal Height
Knowing the optimal mowing height for your type of grass is important. For example, with warm-season grasses the turf height varies by type and can range from 1 to 4 inches. Be sure to research the kind of grass you have to cut it to the ideal height.
Cutting your grass too short, known as scalping, can damage your lawn. When blades are scalped they have to rely on food reserves stored inside the roots in order to regenerate. Depending on the health of your lawn and the time of year, it may be very difficult for your lawn to recover. So never cut more than one-third of the length of your grass blades at one time.
Water According to Your Grass Type
The type of grass you have will determine its watering needs. Typically, warm-season grasses require about 20 percent less hydration than cool-season grasses. Warm-season grasses like centipede, St. Augustine, and Bermuda are very drought-tolerant due to deep root systems. Of all cool-season grasses tall fescue has the highest tolerance for drought, since it also develops a deep root system. A cool-season grass like Kentucky bluegrass, however, goes dormant during periods of drought and rejuvenates when water is less scarce.
Fertilize Just Before the Peak Growth Period
You want to feed your lawn just before its peak growth period. Warm-season grasses should be fertilized in late spring or early summer—before grasses go into the summer growing season. Warm-season grasses do well with a second feeding in late summer.
Cool-season grasses enter their peak growth in spring and in the fall and should receive one fertilizer application per year in the fall—before the grass begins to discolor when cold weather arrives. You can check with a reputable garden center in your area for more specific timing for your area’s fall fertilizer application.
