Your bedroom is your sanctuary—a space to rest and renew. A room where you retreat after a long day, or take a respite from the hustle and bustle of a full house. So when you step into your space it should feel peaceful and welcoming. To make the most of your bedroom consider these do’s and don’ts.
Do: Use All the Right Hues
To create a restful atmosphere in your boudoir experts recommend using a monochromatic color palette. Blues, soft greens, and lavenders conjure feelings of calm and serenity, while earthy colors like amber, brown, or persimmon evoke a sense of coziness and warmth. Steer clear of active colors like yellows, bright reds, and oranges.
Don’t: Forget the Fifth Wall
The “fifth wall” in your bedroom, or in any room, is the ceiling. In a majority of home interior designs ceilings are often left out. Instead of staring up at a blank ceiling as you lay in bed, consider painting it to help your room feel more intimate. If you’re not sure about what color to choose, paint your ceiling a lighter version of what’s on your walls. If you don’t want to use a coat of paint think about stenciling your ceiling or even wallpapering it. But if you want to go in a different direction altogether, think about adding an architectural element like moldings, or beams.
Do: Do Away With Phone and Computer Screens
This might be a big ask, but do your very best not to thumb through your cell phone just before bed. Instead of winding down for the evening you can become preoccupied with goings on in the news or on social media. This can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Do: Choose Natural Fibers
When it comes to bed sheets opt for natural fibers like 100 percent cotton, linen, or bamboo, since synthetic fabrics don’t breathe—satin sheets look luxurious, but can cause you to sweat. For thread counts go for 350 or higher.
Don’t: Ignore Space Under Your Bed
If your bedroom doesn’t offer much in the way of closet space make use of the space beneath your bed to keep your room open and clutter-free. Storage boxes that slide under the bed can hold seasonal clothes and other items that just won’t fit into a small closet or inside dressers. And don’t worry about the boxes being visible—a dust ruffle can conceal your storage solution.
