Sometimes dishwashers can begin to leak for seemingly no apparent reason. If yours leaks while it’s in use here are some possible problems to troubleshoot.
Faulty Door Latch
A latch keeps your dishwasher door closed during a wash cycle. If it becomes loose, and your dishwasher door opens too easily, water can escape. Install a new latch for tighter closure.
Drainage Problems
If water inside your dishwasher doesn’t drain sufficiently during a wash cycle the water level can rise higher than it should. You should check the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher tub for clogs that could hinder good drainage.
Dishwasher Is Not Balanced
If your dishwasher doesn’t sit level it’s likely to leak. To see if your dishwasher is level from front to back place a carpenter’s level on the rail where the bottom rack rolls in and out. To see if the dishwasher is balanced from left to right put the level on the open door. If any area is out of balance adjust the leveling screws on the front legs. You can do so using your fingers, or an open-end adjustable wrench.
Faulty Door Gasket
If you frequently find water on the floor in front of your dishwasher you could have a faulty gasket, which is one of the most common causes of leaks. To determine if you’ve got a leaky gasket open your dishwasher and check the seal around the door. If you find areas that are torn or severely worn down you should have the gasket replaced before using your appliance again.
Improper Detergent
In a pinch you might be tempted to use dish soap inside of your dishwasher, but avoid doing so—it can create excessive suds and cause soap and water to seep out.
