When you’re selling your 30A home, check out this list of seven things you MUST do before showings – your Realtor® and your prospective buyers will thank you.
7 Things You MUST Do Before a Showing
- Take prescription drugs out of your medicine cabinets
- Clean up
- Organize your closets
- Secure your valuables
- Open all the curtains and blinds
- Tuck away family photos
- Get refreshments ready
#1. Take prescription drugs out of your medicine cabinets.
Even prescriptions that you think are harmless should go in a bag that you take with you when you leave the house for a showing. It’s not necessarily that people will take your pills – it’s also that there’s a lot of personal information on those pill bottles.
#2. Clean up.
The house needs to be spotless when you’re having prospective buyers over. You want to show that it’s clean and easy to keep that way – but you can only do that if you spend time clearing out clutter, taking out the trash and thoroughly cleaning.
Pro tip: Hire a professional house-cleaning service before you list your home. That way, you only have to maintain what they’ve done.
#3. Organize your closets.
Pull out all your winter wear and take out at least half of what’s left. You want to show off the home’s great closet space – but if it’s overflowing with your clothing, buyers will envision it overflowing with theirs, too.

#4. Secure your valuables.
Art, jewelry, family heirlooms and other valuables need to go with you when you leave. Even better, get yourself a safety deposit box at the bank – put everything in there while your house is on the market.
#5. Open all the curtains and blinds.
The more light you let into your home, the more favorably prospective buyers will see it. It brightens your space and makes your rooms appear larger – and that’s the best thing you can do for buyers.
#6. Tuck away family photos.
You want buyers to envision their belongings in your space, which means taking down anything that connects the home to you. While you’re creating this newly neutral space, take out any eccentric art, religious decor, or anything that buyers might find offensive or objectionable – including political effects.
#7. Get refreshments ready.
It’s warm outside, and your buyers will love the fact that you put out a bowl of ice filled with water bottles. It’s a nice touch that you can add – and it might just do the trick for buyers who have been out all day looking at home after home. At the very least, it makes your house memorable!
