Most times dishwashers operate normally. Other times they may experience problems with no apparent cause. To help keep your unit running smoothly consider these seven tips.
Clean the filter.
It’s very important to keep the filter inside your dishwasher clean. To clean it pull the lower rack inside your unit forward and you’ll find the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher. You’ll first have to remove the filter door—do so by turning the filter counterclockwise. Next, remove the filter.
Rinse the filter and filter door with clean water and use a toothbrush to get rid of any food particles. You can soak the filter in white vinegar to loosen any caked-on residue. Next, reinstall the clean filter and remember to turn the filter door clockwise to lock it back into place.
Use a descaler for hard water.
Hard water can cause mineral buildup and limescale inside your dishwasher. Use a dishwasher cleaning tablet once monthly to clear away residue from hard water.
Load your appliance the correct way.
It’s important that you always load your dishwasher properly. This means arranging dishes so that the most soiled ones face inward toward the center. Be sure to remove food debris. Place your cups and pots facing down so the dishwasher can spray water inside. Be sure that newer containers and dishes don’t have any labels adhered—this can cause your unit to malfunction.
Make sure the dishwasher is full before running it.
Running your dishwasher only when it’s full can help lessen how often you need to use it, which not only helps it last longer but makes for the efficient use of water.
Make sure there aren’t any obstructions.
After you load up your dishes make sure that the spray nozzles can spin freely and don’t get stuck against dishes, handles, and utensils.
Avoid putting these items in the dishwasher:
Jars and cans with paper labels, candle jars, and items like delicate china and glassware.
Lookout for standing water inside.
After running a load of dishes a little water left at the bottom of the dishwasher is normal, but if there’s an inch of water that remains you may have a clog.
Since dishwashers vary among brands check the manufacturer’s instructions for servicing and brand-specific care.
