After the purchase of an existing home, the exterior paint color may be one of many changes. When choosing a new hue, here are a few things to remember.
Don’t Blend In
If the color palettes of the neighbors’ homes are very similar, for instance shades of beige, don’t feel pressure to blend in, but don’t become the neighborhood eyesore, either. The key is to find a happy medium. A pleasing color that doesn’t draw the ire of the neighbors.
Different Home Styles Lend Themselves to Different Color Palettes
If a community is populated with contemporary homes, it is likely that there may be some bold color choices as well. In this instance, committing to a striking pigment may not face much resistance.
Victorian homes, often embellished with ornate designs, may also lend themselves to bolder colors to accentuate their intricate detail and character. Similarly, art deco, bohemian-style homes, and shotgun houses can be complemented by colors that stand out in order to add drama, or to showcase their charm. The appearance of stucco Spanish colonial revival homes is often maximized by warm tones.
Consider the Parameters of Homeowners’ Associations
Although homeowners may wish to have total autonomy when choosing the exterior colors of their homes, they should familiarize themselves with any parameters established by associations who oversee the appearance of their communities.
While many of these associations can sometimes get a bad rap, they can be helpful by suggesting paint colors, and by educating homeowners about the traditional, or historical appearance of their residences.
