When you’re at the local nursery and you’re eyeing a houseplant, or a few houseplants, to beautify the inside of your home consider these three things before you make that purchase.
Pets and Kids
Make sure the plants you’re thinking about bringing home aren’t toxic to your pets. You can verify whether or not the plants are poisonous to your dogs and cats with a simple search on the ASPCA’s database (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Your pets may not appreciate the beauty of your new find, but they will appreciate your efforts to keep them safe.
If you’ve got young children consider the placement of your plants. Free-standing greenery could entice younger kids to put their hands into the dirt. So think about plants that can be placed on shelves and safely out of their reach.
Sunlight in Your Home
Although you and your potential new plant might appear to be a match, the space where you want to place it in your home and the plant’s light requirements might not be. So consider the amount of light each of your rooms receive and compare it with the plant’s requirements for sunlight. Many plants require full sun, while many others don’t.
Humidity in Your Home
Homes can have very different levels of humidity—depending on where you live, the heating system in your home, and whether or not you use a humidifier. Humidity is a consideration you should keep in mind when you shop for houseplants, since plants vary widely in their tolerance of moisture. Many tropical species enjoy moisture, while others like jade—a tropical succulent—do well in dry air.
If you’ve got your eye on plants that don’t jive with the humidity levels inside your home, consider misting the leaves, or investing in a humidifier or a dehumidifier.
