If you’re like many people, you’ve heard that painting your front door will automatically improve your home’s curb appeal and result in a faster – and more profitable – sale.
But is it true?
Here’s what you need to know about repainting your front door to sell your home.
Should You Give Your Front Door a Facelift to Sell Your Home?
You can repaint your front door with a quart of primer, a quart of paint and some other supplies in just a weekend – but is it something you should really invest your time in if you’re selling your house?
Here’s the deal: If you’re staying in your home and you want a freshly painted front door, go for it. But if you’re selling, you’ll want to talk to your real estate agent before you lay down the drop cloth and rush out to the home improvement store to compare paint samples.
Your agent will let you know if it’s a wise investment of your time (and money). You don’t want to have the “odd house out” on the block, but you can’t have a shabby front door, either. Your agent will guide you – all you have to do is ask.
Door-Painting Tips From the Pros
If you do decide to paint your front door, use these tips:
- Choose whether to take off the door or paint it in place. If you paint it in place, you’ll have to tape off the frame – and no matter what you do, remove the doorknob, deadbolt and door-knocker. (Don’t forget to tape off the peephole, too.)
- Sand away old paint, bumps and marks so your new paint will stick.
- Apply primer.
- Apply two coats of paint, but make sure you let the first dry thoroughly before you apply the second. Then, make sure the second coat is dry (it’ll take longer than the first did) before you reattach the hardware and, if necessary, re-hang the door.
