When you’re surfing through 30A real estate listings, you’ll see homes listed as having garden tubs. But what is a garden tub, and should you buy a home with one in it?
Here’s the scoop on these tremendous tubs.
What is a Garden Tub? The Basics
A garden tub – also commonly called a soaking tub – is reminiscent of bathtubs of yore (but with running water). These free-standing, oval tubs are larger, deeper and generally more comfortable than standard bathtubs are. They’re considered luxury bathroom amenities, but they don’t typically come with a luxury price tag.
Standard Garden Tub Size
A normal garden tub measures 42 inches wide, 60 inches long and 24 inches deep. However, that’s just the baseline – they can be much larger (sometimes as much as 70 inches wide).
A garden tub’s size makes it easier to fully immerse yourself in water so your knees aren’t sticking out – and while they don’t do anything about the cold porcelain on your back, they definitely provide a lot more comfort than a standard tub does.
What Materials Are Used for Garden Tubs?
You can find garden tubs made from acrylic, plastic and ceramic, but by far the most common is enameled cast iron. Enameled cast iron retains heat, and it’s easy to clean. Composite stone tubs are becoming more popular, so you’ll likely see those, as well – particularly in newer homes.
