According to a recent survey by Realtor.com 30 percent of Americans across the country engaged in home improvement projects during their time in quarantine. An additional 20 percent who hadn’t started a project said they planned to.
What was the number-one project on their to-do lists? Organizing garages and closets. Next on their lists were gardening, painting walls, and rearranging furniture.
If you want to join in on the quarantine spring clean here’s how you can give your garage and closets an organizational overhaul.
Your Garage
Garages are magnets for broken things that need to be fixed, things outgrown, things out of style, things passed down, and things simply forgotten. Boxes of miscellaneous Christmas decorations from years past, bikes that the children have outgrown or ones that need to be fixed, antiquated electronic gadgets, gallons of leftover paint, and a host of other odds-and-ends all take up residence in a garage at one time or another.
With so much clutter where do you start? Donate your old Christmas decor and functioning bikes to Goodwill—when their services become available based on guidance from local or state government and health officials. In the meantime group these items and set them aside. Drop-off broken bikes and non-functioning small appliances at your local recycler, when their services are available.
To deal with leftover gallons of paint, if you’re up for it, try mixing and reusing latex products. Perhaps you can create an accent wall somewhere in your home. Recycle the empty cans. You can also pour latex paint into a cardboard box containing shredded paper or kitty litter, allow it to dry, and toss it into the trash.
Your Closets
It’s been quite a while since you’ve worn some of the clothes in your closet. Sadly, some pieces have become too small, others pleasantly too big.
It’s not rocket science. Give the clothes away. Go through your items and remove the pieces that no longer fit or jive with your tastes anymore. Donate the clothes to the Salvation Army, or to Goodwill— when their services are available based on guidance from local or state government and health officials.
