Sometimes you may not be quite sure of the best time to paint the exterior of your home. It’s important to know that paint application really depends on three things: temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Here’s how each can affect your paint job to help you determine the ideal time to pop open the paint.
Temperature
Sunny weather and moderate temperatures are ideal conditions for painting. When temps fall below 50 degrees, however, the chilly weather makes it difficult for paint to adhere and it will run. Extreme heat can also hurt your paint job and may cause it to crack. So avoid extremes of hot and cold. Ideal outdoor temps range from 65 to 90 degrees.
Another factor to consider with outdoor temperatures is the safety and well-being of those painting. For safety reasons do your best to avoid working in extremely hot conditions.
All in all, the best time to paint the outside of your home is in the spring or fall when temperatures are more moderate.
Humidity and Precipitation
In most cases paint on exterior surfaces can dry within one hour, but high humidity can increase water vapor in the air and on the surfaces you paint, which can prolong the drying process.
Obviously, if rain is in the forecast you should pick another time to paint since your surfaces need to be dry in order for paint to adhere. So keep track of the forecast to plan your project to make sure it isn’t interrupted or ruined by rain.
Also, when painting after wet weather make sure that surfaces have had time to dry. After significant rainfall you may need to wait a few days for things to dry thoroughly, because you don’t want the outside of your home to be damp or moist.
So whether you’re thinking about waiting until next spring to paint the exterior of your home, or considering this fall, keep an eye on the forecast and take advantage of days with clear weather and moderate temps.
