When you make an offer on a home for sale along 30A, the seller has a few options – including rejection. (Sellers can also accept an offer as-is or make a counteroffer.) But why do sellers reject offers?
Here’s what you need to know.
Why Do Sellers Reject Offers?
Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or you’re working on your last real estate transaction, some of the most common reasons sellers reject offers include:
- Your offer is too low
- Your earnest money deposit wasn’t “serious” enough
- Your offer seemed too complicated
Here’s a closer look at each.
Reason #1 Sellers Reject Offers: Your Offer is Too Low
Sellers usually have an eye on the bottom line when their home is on the market, and if someone doesn’t offer them enough that they’ll make a certain profit, they’ll often reject the offer outright. Sometimes it’s not even about profit; they may need to sell at a price that only allows them to “break even.”

Reason #2 Sellers Reject Offers: Your Earnest Money Deposit Isn’t “Earnest” Enough
Your earnest money deposit shows sellers that you’re serious – and that you’re a good reason for them to take the home off the market. If you only have a small earnest money deposit, sellers may feel that you’re at risk of walking away before the transaction closes.
Reason #3 Sellers Reject Offers: Your Offer Seems Too Complicated
Although sellers are typically interested in making the best possible profit on a home, they’re also interested in an “easy” deal. If you ask for a lot of concessions, repairs, or other contingencies, they may shy away and work with someone who requires less work.
